This site if frequently updated, especially the Upcoming Events ... please keep checking back.

Welcome!

Do you need help finding resources in La Pine, Sunriver, Gilchrist and Crescent?

My name is Kathy Matthews, and I welcome you to this website especially designed for those of us who live in La Pine, Sunriver, Gilchrist and Crescent. It is intended to outline the community resources available to Southern Deschutes County and Northern Klamath County. There is some info on Northern Lake County also included. It is not sponsored by anybody but me.

I have reserved the top portion for announcements and upcoming events. The middle section has info regarding services for the homeless and those in crisis in the greater Central Oregon area, and the bottom part is for the South County area.

The sidebar is full of information, please take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with all that is on there.

There are also 100's more resource links at the very bottom of the page for the whole Central Oregon area ... just click on each box to find out more about each agency and the resource links they have posted. I have also concentrated information for those with disabilities along with those links.

My goal is to pull out and organize applicable information for our end of the county. Of course, we may have to travel to Bend or Redmond for some things, but it is also nice to know what is offered right here at home.

If you have something to add, please email me at: oregongiftsofcomfortandjoy@hotmail.com or call our office at: 541-536-9010.

Thank you for stopping by, I hope this site has been useful to you.

Kathy

FAN advocates help fill families' basic needs:

Published: October 13. 2006 4:00 AM PST
The Bend Bulletin

ORGANIZATION: Family Access Network

HOW IT WORKS: The Family Access Network is made up of 22 advocates who are located in public schools throughout Deschutes County. All public schools in the county have either a part-time or on-call advocate. These staff members help connect local students and families with basic needs such as food, housing, health care and clothing. The advocates are familiar with local aid agencies and the kind of services they offer. FAN also partners with local businesses and organizations that providegoods or services to families in need. Julie Lyche, the program director of FAN, said many advocates are working with homeless families to try to find them housing before the weather gets even colder. During the 2005-06 school year, FAN connected 2,100 kids with clothing (supported through the Assistance League of Bend), helped improve housing for 1,400 families, connected 1,850 families with food assistance, helped 775 families find energy assistance and helped 1,360 families with health coverage or health care needs. Lyche says the goal of this approach is to empower families to take action to help themselves.

WHO QUALIFIES: Any family in need qualifies for services. Parents or children contact their local school to reach their FAN advocate. Many students are referred by teachers.

COST: Free.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are needed for fundraising events in the spring.

CONTACT: FAN advocates can be reached through local schools. Contact the program director Julie Lyche at 693-5677

Adult Job Training - COIC
and Experience Works

Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council - COIC receives grants and contracts to provide retraining and employment services throughout
Central Oregon. BCC and COIC collaborate to help COIC clients develop or improve skills so they become job ready, employed, self-sufficient and/or complete educational goals. COIC sends BCC as many as 12 clients a week who are required to complete between 10-30 hours of community service/job training until they find suitable employment. Ages vary, but most are under the age of 30 and are considered hard to employee due to a disability or a lack of work experience. These individuals receive skills in office work, operating the register or learning customer service in the Thriftstore, janitorial work or skills in catering and food prep. BCC staff assist and evaluate their skills, attitude, learning capacity, demeanor, dress, etc. and hold weekly one-on-one sessions with each client to discuss how they are doing, and where and what they need to improve in order to obtain or keep a job.

Supported Housing for those with mental illness (from the Deschutes County website):

DCMH believes that safe and affordable housing should be available to all. Case Managers work closely with consumers to help them find housing in the least restrictive setting or to maintain current housing.

CSS also offers a variety of supported housing programs for those who meet eligibility:

  • Adult Foster Homes: DCMH has three adult foster homes with 5 beds in each home. These foster homes serve adults who are making the transition back into the community from various institutions. There are strict guidelines for qualifications and eligibility. Contact Sarah Haefele at (541)330-4639 or email at Sarah_Haefele@co.deschutes.or.us for more information.
  • Emma’s Place is an 11 unit long-term apartment complex for adults with serious mental illness. Emma’s Place is a drug and alcohol free complex. Residents must be consumers of DCMH and be referred to the program through their therapist. Qualified consumers outside of Deschutes County are eligible to apply as well. There is a DCMH case manager on-site 10-15 hours/week to provide case management and skills training. All other CSS services are available to these residents. Contact Sarah Haefele at (541)330-4639 or email at Sarah_Haefele@co.deschutes.or.us for more information.
  • Horizon House is a 14 unit transitional apartment complex for adults with serious mental illness who are difficult to house and who would benefit from intensive case management, groups, and skills training to learn skills necessary to transition successfully into independent living. Consumers need to be open with DCMH and be referred to the program by their therapist. Qualified consumers outside of Deschutes County are welcome to apply as well. A case manager is on-site 30+ hours/week. Horizon House is a drug and alcohol free complex. Contact Sarah Haefele at (541)330-4639 or email at Sarah_Haefele@co.deschutes.or.us for more information.

CentralOregonOpenLearners (Central Oregon Open Learners) - Our acronym says it all. This group is COOL, a secular, inclusive support and activity group for unschoolers and relaxed homeschoolers in Central Oregon, specifically in Bend and the surrounding areas.

COOL was founded in order to provide support for parents as well as activities, learning opportunities, socialization, and fun for the children. We strive to be respectful parents, helpful friends, and knowledgeable mentors.

We have weekly park or play days, a monthly Parent's night out, family potlucks, field trips, hands-on activities (swim parties, geocaching adventures, card & craft making parties, clay classes, knitting club) and online as well as in person support. We will continue these activities and encourage new members to make suggestions and organize outings.

We are a cooperative support group, meaning that all members need to contribute to the group in order to make us grow and thrive. There are no dues or requirements to join, but the more involved you are, the more you’ll feel like a part of our growing community.

Our group is non-discriminatory on the basis of race, religion, ethnic background, political or sexual orientation. We have formed for the sole purpose of establishing a community of local homeschooling families.
